Williamson County Schools Superintendent Jason Golden has announced he is stepping down to become Associate Director of Schools for Finance, Administration, and Legal Services at Franklin Special School District.
Golden has led WCS since 2019, first as interim superintendent and then in the full role. During his tenure, the district upheld its reputation as one of Tennessee’s highest-performing systems. It posted a 97.5% graduation rate for the Class of 2024, led the state with a 25.3 average ACT composite for the Class of 2025 (79% scoring 21 or higher), and achieved TCAP proficiency gains across core subjects. WCS has been designated an “Advancing” district with numerous Reward Schools.
The transition creates continuity in strong academics while opening opportunities to address key priorities, including educator retention and compensation in a high cost-of-living area, responses to discipline and bullying, and student growth—particularly in middle grades.
JC Bowman with Professional Educators of Tennessee (PET) noted the importance of stable leadership for educators and students. “We recognize the value of leaders who bring operational expertise, fiscal responsibility, and a student-focused approach,” the organization stated. Bowman said his organization extends best wishes to Golden in his new role and reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for competitive compensation, legal protections, nonpartisan policies, and professional resources for classroom educators.
The Williamson County Board of Education will now conduct a search for the next superintendent. Bowman encouraged a thorough, transparent process that incorporates educator input and builds on the district’s strengths while strengthening retention, school climate, and staff support. We remain ready to support Williamson County educators during the transition and to collaborate with new leadership.
