Statement on Governor Bill Lee’s Last State of the State Address by JC Bowman, Professional Educators of Tennessee

Date: Feb. 2, 2026 Location: House Chamber, State Capitol

As we reflect on Governor Bill Lee’s tenure during his final State of the State address, it’s essential to recognize that he was a better man than governor. His legacy will inevitably be found somewhere between unfulfilled potential and an open door to lobbyists. The unprecedented challenges of a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic hindered his ability to fully realize the impact of his leadership. Consequently, we are left to wonder what could have been, should have been, or may have been.

The Tennessee General Assembly now stands at a crucial juncture, with the opportunity to lay the groundwork for the next governor. As they navigate the final days of this administration, it is important to acknowledge both the achievements and shortcomings of Governor Lee’s time in office.

While we appreciate certain aspects of his previous budgets, particularly the increases in TISA funding and teacher salary targets, these positive elements are overshadowed by significant concerns. Governor Lee’s education legacy will regrettably be marked by:

Demoralized Educators: Many teachers feel undervalued and unsupported, leading to a declining morale within the profession.

Growing Teacher Shortage: The ongoing exodus of educators from the classroom highlights systemic issues that remain unaddressed.

Inadequate Support for Public Teachers: The failure to provide necessary resources and support for traditional public education has left many teachers struggling.

– Weakening of the Tennessee Department of Education: This has raised questions about the oversight and effectiveness of education policies.

– Insufficient Accountability in the School Voucher Program: Concerns regarding transparency and accountability have contributed to public skepticism about the administration’s education agenda.

Looking forward, it is imperative that the General Assembly prioritizes the needs of traditional public education and addresses the growing concerns of educators and families across Tennessee. We wish Governor Lee well in his future endeavors, but it is crucial that we learn from his administration’s experiences as we move toward a more promising future for our educators and students.

We need to embrace this moment as an opportunity for reflection and action, ensuring that the next administration is better equipped to support our teachers and uphold the value and promise of public education. —- JC Bowman, Professional Educators of Tennessee
