Could Paramount Trade Hollywood for Music City?

Paramount Skydance is reportedly searching for approximately 400,000 square feet of office space in Nashville as the entertainment giant considers moving some operations away from Los Angeles.

For generations, Hollywood has been synonymous with the entertainment business. But one of its most recognizable names may be looking east—and Nashville appears to have its attention.

Paramount Skydance is reportedly searching for approximately 400,000 square feet of office space in Nashville as the entertainment giant considers moving some operations away from Los Angeles. The company has contacted developers and is reportedly looking for space it could occupy within the next two to three years.

That doesn’t mean Paramount is definitely moving its headquarters to Nashville. No relocation has been announced, and other locations remain possible.

But this has moved beyond Tennessee simply making a sales pitch. Paramount is looking at Nashville real estate.

Tennessee Deputy Gov. and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart McWhorter began publicly courting the company this summer, sending Paramount Skydance Chairman and CEO David Ellison a letter encouraging him to consider Tennessee as a future home.

The timing is intriguing.

Paramount Skydance is pursuing its proposed $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a deal that would combine some of entertainment’s most recognizable brands. The Justice Department approved the transaction in June, but California and 11 other states have sued to block it on antitrust grounds.

As Paramount considers what the combined company might look like, Nashville offers an interesting alternative to the traditional Hollywood model. Music City already has the talent.

Nashville is home to major record labels, publishers, management companies, talent agencies, production professionals, and a growing technology sector. Tennessee also offers a lower-cost business environment, no state tax on individual earned income, and incentives for qualifying film and television productions.

For an entertainment company looking toward its next generation, that combination could be attractive.

A Paramount presence could also broaden Nashville’s entertainment identity. Music built this city’s brand, but today’s entertainment business increasingly crosses traditional boundaries between music, film, television, streaming, sports, technology, and digital media.

Nashville already understands the creative economy. Paramount could significantly expand it.

There are obstacles. Finding 400,000 square feet that meets the company’s requirements will not be simple. Nashville also faces familiar growing pains involving housing costs, transportation, and infrastructure.

And Hollywood isn’t disappearing from Southern California.

Still, the symbolism would be hard to miss. For more than a century, aspiring actors, writers, musicians, and producers have packed their bags and headed west in search of an entertainment career.

Perhaps the next chapter has some of Hollywood packing its bags and heading east. We even have Starbucks Coffee!

Nashville spent decades building Music City. It may soon discover that its next act includes a little more Hollywood.
