DEI in Disguise? Belmont University Accused of Circumventing Tennessee Ban Through Rebranding Scheme

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Belmont University is under scrutiny after leaked emails and undercover video recordings suggest the school is actively working to continue controversial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives under a rebranded name: Hope, Unity, and Belonging (HUB).

The controversy erupted following public statements from U.S. Congressman Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) and conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, both of whom pointed to internal communications and faculty whistleblowers as evidence that Belmont is attempting to bypass both state and federal DEI restrictions. Under Tennessee law, DEI bureaucracy in public higher education has been significantly restricted, and under former President Donald Trump’s executive orders, institutions receiving federal funds were directed to eliminate DEI-related programs that promote discrimination based on race or sex.

In a leaked undercover video published by Townhall, Belmont’s Assistant Director of Student Success and Flourishing, Jozef Lukey, is heard acknowledging the school’s efforts to maintain an “inclusive space” without drawing attention. Lukey reportedly admits that Belmont is aware of undocumented students on campus and is seeking to avoid federal scrutiny—raising additional concerns about compliance with immigration and education regulations.

“We’re going to be changing the title to Hope, Unity and Belonging,” Belmont President Greg Jones said at a Sept. 12 faculty senate meeting, according to coverage from Belmont Vision. The rebranding follows a task force recommendation to consolidate DEI efforts under a new administrative umbrella. The newly named HUB office now falls under the leadership of Vice President for Aspirational Excellence Lori Baker, formerly of Baylor University.

The internal restructuring appears to leave core DEI functions largely intact, prompting critics to argue that the university’s actions are an intentional end-run around legal mandates. “Leaked recordings from Belmont University in red state Tennessee show that school officials are trying to trick the Trump administration by simply renaming their DEI program to HUB… while changing nothing,” Charlie Kirk tweeted.

Congressman Ogles echoed the concern, stating that multiple Belmont professors contacted his office with claims that DEI efforts are continuing unabated behind the scenes. Ogles also shared a leaked email confirming the existence of a Faculty DEI Committee as recently as April 2025, including plans for electing a new DEI Chair.

“Belmont claims to be a Christian university. DEI is a radically un-Christian, anti-truth ideology. This has no place in Tennessee,” Ogles said in a public statement.

Critics are now calling for a federal investigation into Belmont’s continued access to government funding. “They shouldn’t get another dime of federal money. Investigate!” Kirk wrote.

Belmont University, which hosted presidential debates in 2008 and 2020, has not publicly responded to the allegations. As pressure mounts, lawmakers and watchdog groups may soon demand greater transparency and accountability from the private Nashville institution.
