GOP candidate for Governor John Rose says he will debate his Democratic opponent in the general election. He made the comments Wednesday at a campaign rally in Nashville. Memphis Democrat Jerri Green is expected to be the Democrat’s choice.
“It’s important that candidates debate in the general election. Tennesseans deserve a debate and to hear what the candidates would do as their next Governor,” said John Rose.
Rose recently stated on his social media, “I’m committing right now to debating in the general election if I’m the Republican nominee. We should’ve had a debate in the Republican primary. @Marsha Blackburn, will you make the same commitment?”
In Kingsport this week, U.S. Senator Blackburn told WJHL-TV in the Tri-Cities that she would not commit to the debate. In the 2018 election, current Republican Governor Bill Lee debated his competitor Karl Dean.
The Blackburn campaign team has limited media and public access to Blackburn during the primary. Despite her claim to be talking to Tennesseans every single day, her campaign has an invitation-only ‘get out the vote’ event scheduled for Election Day. One election observer pointed out that Blackburn does talk to Tennesseans every single day, “as long as you pay to see her.”
