I am regularly asked by clients and potential clients to provide advice on what they should look for when choosing a security company to protect their home or business. Obviously, manpower, training, experience, technological expertise, etc. are all very important.
But the second set of questions I’m usually asked are just as important. What should my security company be focused on to protect my business, customers and employees?
Picking the right security company is just the first step. Making sure that security team has a full understanding of the particular needs and challenges of securing your business is also vital.
Here’s a partial checklist of what they should be doing:
Checking entrance and exit points.
Checking, and double-checking entrances and exits to your property and buildings is one of the most important tasks on the checklist. Thieves, disgruntled employees, and yes even competitors target businesses via entrance points that may be unmonitored.

Looking for suspicious activity or persons.
Patrol guards are keenly aware of their clients’ surroundings. Not only are guards trained to observe suspicious individuals, but also be aware of unattended packages, vehicles, broken windows, or other items that fall under the category of ‘unusual’.
Being on alert for emergencies.
Patrol guards are also on point to be aware of potential emergency concerns. Crimes, smoke/fires, broken parking area lights, flood concerns, severe storm potential damage, etc all fall into the area of emergency awareness.
Get Lit!
Thieves, criminals and vandals love to operate in the shadows. Darkness is their best ally when up to no good. A well lit facility and parking lot is the best way to encourage them to look elsewhere for an easier target. Your security team should be advising you on how to deal with any lighting needs that should be addressed.
These are just a few of the areas our security guards at Maxxguard regularly include on their checklist for most clients, as well as many more specific security requests depending upon client needs. When you are determining how to best protect your own business, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from trained professionals in your community to make sure you do things right on the front end rather than learning from bad experience.
