The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has suspended all fraternity and sorority activities in response to a hazing investigation initiated this week UTC officials announced in a letter sent to fraternity and sorority leaders on Friday.
The moratorium freezes chapter operations through Sept. 5 and covers social events, recruitment, new member education and organizational programs. Officials said the pause is meant to “reflect and take meaningful steps to ensure the health and safety of all students.”
A mandatory community meeting for all Greek Life members is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Sept. 2 at McKenzie Arena. University leaders said that failure to attend could affect a chapter’s ability to resume activities. Topics will include risk management, harm reduction and community standards, the letter said.
This moratorium will allow the University, in partnership with student leaders, chapter advisers and national organizations, to reevaluate and realign policies, procedures, and practices related to safety, risk management, and harm reduction,” Artanya Wesley, vice chancellor, said in the letter. “Our goal is to strengthen fraternity and sorority life in ways that uphold UTC community standards and foster a culture of care, accountability, leadership, and respect.”
Wesley said the university remains committed to supporting Greek Life, and she said the pause is “an important step in building a safer and stronger future together.”
The pause is not related to events on campus on Thursday involving a false report of a potential active shooter, UTC spokesperson Jay Blackman said in a emailed statement.
