KNOXVILLE, Tenn. University of Tennessee sophomore Kevin Ho has been named the 2025 National Veteran of the Year in Higher Education, earning the top honor from Military Friendly for his leadership and service to fellow student veterans on campus.

Ho, originally from Lorton, Virginia, served in the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division Light Infantry before enrolling at UT in 2024. Now a supply chain management major in the Haslam College of Business, he said the national recognition still feels “surreal.”

“I never would have imagined being in the position I am now when I first arrived in Knoxville,” Ho said. “To be selected among so many outstanding veterans in higher education really makes me feel recognized. I hope to be a good Military Friendly representative, and I want to keep helping my fellow veterans on campus.”

Leadership Across Campus

Since arriving at UT, Ho has emerged as one of the most active voices in the university’s veteran community. He works as a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs work-study student at UT’s Veterans Success Center and serves as president of the campus chapter of Student Veterans of America.

His involvement goes beyond veteran advocacy. Ho is also a senator in the Student Government Association, vice president of risk management for Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and a member of the Interfraternity Council Judicial Board.

Military Friendly cited Ho’s “leadership, advocacy and community engagement” as key reasons for selecting him for the national award, highlighting his efforts to create a supportive environment for student veterans and help them navigate the challenges of academic life.

UT Officials Praise Ho’s Impact

Amber Williams, UT vice provost for student success, said the recognition is well deserved.

“We were thrilled when Kevin was named Veteran of the Year for Tennessee, so just imagine how proud we are that he has earned the national title,” Williams said. “I can think of no better role model or example of a veteran, scholar, campus leader and Volunteer.”

Thomas Cruise, director of UT’s Veterans Success Center, echoed that praise.

“This honor reflects not only Kevin’s dedication, resilience and leadership as a student veteran but also the strength and impact of our veteran community here at UT,” Cruise said. “Kevin’s achievement inspires us all.”

A Growing Reputation for Veteran Support

Military Friendly works with higher-education institutions and businesses to strengthen opportunities for service members transitioning into civilian employment. UT currently holds a Silver Military Friendly School ranking, placing it among the top universities nationwide for supporting military-connected students.

Ho was first named Tennessee Veteran of the Year in June before advancing to win the national award.
