Tullahoma City School Board Unanimously Adopts Policy to Remove LGBTQ Pride Flags from Classrooms

The Tullahoma City Schools Board of Education has been considering a policy outlining expectations for flags and other displays on all of its campuses. The change would allow the district to remove LGBTQ+ flags from classrooms and allow only the American and Tennessee flags.

As part of its consideration, the board reviewed policies of two school systems (Coffee County and Tipton County), contacted the Tennessee School Boards Association and consulted with their attorney.

A study session was held by the board in mid-October, and on Tuesday night, the board unanimously passed a policy change limiting classroom flag displays to the U.S. and Tennessee flags. Exceptions are where other flags displayed are part of the curriculum or special events. Presumably, that would mean a flag of France might be displayed in French class, for example.

“The Board reviews policies as part of its role and duties, and considers additions or alterations to policies to provide better clarity around expectations,” a spokesperson had said prior to the meeting.

The Coffee County School District recently adopted a policy that permits only American flags and State of Tennessee flags to be flown in classrooms. Read more about the Coffee County School District’s flag policy here.

Meanwhile, local Democrats have been rallying their supporters to oppose the change and pressure the school board members to allow the PRIDE displays in classrooms. Their efforts came up short, but they are now pledging to run Democrats for school board offices in an attempt to overturn the policy.
