The Trump White House has reportedly announced the release of $5.5 billion in federal education funds that were previously frozen. These funds are part of nearly $7 billion authorized by Congress and that had been withheld since June 30, 2025, leading to some significant disruptions in planning for the upcoming school year by districts across Tennessee. Classes starting in Tennessee within the next few weeks, it is welcome relief to parents, educators and school districts.
The newly released funds include over $2 billion aimed at teacher training and recruitment, especially in low-income areas. This decision came in response to bipartisan pressure, including from ten Senate Republicans, as well as legal challenges from 24 states and the District of Columbia, who contended that the withholding of these funds was illegal.
Additionally, $1.3 billion for after-school programs was released on July 18, 2025, leaving around $5.5 billion still frozen prior to today’s announcement.
JC Bowman, the executive director of Professional Educators of Tennessee, remarked that “the move was expected and hopefully districts will use the money as it was intended.”
