Tennessee Political Notebook: Van Epps Gets His Assignments

Special election 7th District winner GOP Congressman Matt Van Epps was sworn in quickly following his win. Now he’s quickly received his committee assignments in Congress.

He has been appointed to the House Homeland Security Committee, which former Congressman Mark Green Chaired prior to his resignation. Van Epps has also been assigned to the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

Van Epps will face voters again in an August Republican primary and November general election to keep the seat he won by about nine points earlier this month.

Van Epps is also filling out his key staff positions by retaining three top aides who served his predecessor, Mark Green. Sam Nienow will continue as his Chief of Staff; Alex Joyner (who ran the campaign) will be a Senior Advisor focused on communication, communications, and operations; and Steve Allbrooks will remain as district Director for the 7th District.

VOUCHER PRIVATE SCHOOL TUITION INCREASES KICKING IN. “Thank you sir, may I have another?” – Animal House

Private school Columbia Academy has just sent out a notice that tuition at the school will increase 5.1% next year. Are other private schools that are now accepting $7300 voucher payments implementing similar, or higher, tuition increases, heading into the new year? Could just be an “amazing coincidence,” right?

NOT ONE AND DONE.
When former Republican state representative Sheila Butt ran for Maury County Mayor as an independent three years ago, she promised she would serve one term and be done. Now she’s announced she is seeking another term and will seek the Republican nomination in a county caucus in February

Word out of Maury County is that County Commissioner Gabe Howard may challenge Butt. Stay tuned!

WHY IS CHAZ MOLDER SILENT ON PROTECTING GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS?
Speaking of Maury County, has Democrat Mayor of Columbia Chaz Molder (running for Congress against Republican Andy Ogles) issued a believable statement about how he would’ve voted on the House bill to protect girls and women in sports? It passed 218-206! Every Republican, including Andy Ogles, voted for it, while 206 out of 208 Democrats voted against it.

Does anybody honestly believe Molder would’ve broken with the democrat leadership if he was already in Congress? Why does Chaz want men in girls’ locker rooms like the rest of the Democratic Party?
