U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn is backing a new bill to keep food assistance flowing to beneficiaries during the government shutdown.
The Keep SNAP Funded Act aims to ensure uninterrupted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, even as federal government funding comes to an end.
“Roughly one in 10 Tennesseans receive SNAP benefits for food assistance, and they shouldn’t have to worry about where their next meal will come from,” said Blackburn in announcing her support for assistance continuing after November 1. Governor Bill Lee announced this week that the State of Tennessee cannot cover the SNAP benefits for the approximately 700,000 Tennesseans who depend on food stamps.
“Alabama Senator Katie Britt is also backing the legislation. Democrats could end this shutdown today. Every day this shutdown continues, Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats continue to prove they couldn’t care less about hardworking Americans. They would rather prevent millions of Americans from putting food on the table than support a spending bill identical to one they supported 13 times during the Biden Administration, all so they can pander to their billionaire donors and increasingly radicalized base. I will continue to put hardworking Americans first and join my Republican colleagues in voting to reopen the government. My team and I will stay in touch with state officials as we work toward solutions that ease the pain countless Alabamians and Americans are feeling due to Democrats’ selfishness,” stated Senator Britt.
