Political Notebook: Freddie “Never Ready” O’Connell Ice Storm Edition

GO BLUE, GET SCREWED.

Nashvillians are quickly learning the same lessons that New Yorkers are learning under the Woke leadership of their new Mayor Zohran Mamdani: “Go woke go broke”, “Go left get left in the cold”.

As Nashville experiences the sixth day of over 80,000 residences being left powerless by NES, meaning hundreds of thousands of people have no power, voters are starting to recognize the folly of consistently picking left-wing leaders motivated by ideology rather than practical reality.

Even Mayor Freddie O’Connell is now trying to distance himself from the inept, failed leadership of the Democrats running NES. Despite claiming he backs the NES leaders 100%, he chose to do so from another room, holding a separate press conference from the NES leaders yesterday.  It was the first time that ice storm updates were conducted separately. Sorry, Freddie, you can run, but you cannot hide!

NASHVILLE’S HIGH HOTEL/MOTEL TAXES ADD TO THE PAIN
As thousands of Nashvillians flock to local hotels to avoid the impact of being left freezing and in the dark, they’re experiencing the exorbitant hotel/motel taxes that were raised to build the new Titans stadium. Although intended to punish tourists rather than residents It is residents (aka voters) who are paying the huge prices this week.

Nashville increased its hotel occupancy tax by 1% (totaling 7%) starting July 1, 2023, specifically to help fund a new Tennessee Titans stadium, a state-authorized measure passed in 2022. This adds to existing local taxes, though a nightly fee also remains, with proceeds directed to the new enclosed stadium project and other local tourism initiatives.

Will the Metro Council and Titans reimburse citizens for the payment of the punitive tax during the ice crisis or simply look at it as a bonus to stuff into their already flush pockets? More importantly will voters remember the next time Metro Council elections and the Mayoral election rolls around?

FREDDIE FINDS FUNDS FOR ILLEGALS BUT NOT FOR THEE

Last summer it only took about 24 hours for Mayor Freddie and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to create a fund to help illegal immigrant families affected by ICE enforcement actions. Initially, the fund aimed to provide emergency aid such as food, housing, childcare, and transportation. Its purpose later expanded to include funding for nonprofits that offer immigration-related legal services.

But Freddie was much slower to act as hundreds of thousands of honest, decent, taxpaying LEGAL citizens of Nashville suffered through the ravages of the horrific effects of Ice Storm Fern. (Freddie is clearly more concerned about ICE than ice!) FIVE days after the ice storm shuttered Nashville, Never Ready Freddie announced some meager support for Nashvillians suffering from the poor leadership and decisions of his administration and NES.  In Nashville it clearly pays, literally and figuratively, to be an illegal alien.

WILL AFTER ACTION REVIEWS REVEAL THE TRUTH OR COVER UPS!
In the aftermath of this disastrous preparation for and response to the ice storm there will clearly be a lot of demands for explanations and information. Based upon evidence of duck and cover already taking place, from questions surrounding the alleged refusal to accept the offer of linemen and other assistance in the hours and days following the initial storm to still troublesome inaccurate timelines and responses regarding outages and recovery, it is doubtful that the O’Connell administration will ever be forthcoming about what actually happened and how things could’ve been handled better. But there is always hope.
