Memphis, Nashville Among ‘Six Surprisingly Inexpensive U.S. Cities To Visit’

Memphis and Nashville are among six U.S. cities that Daily Passport recently named “surprisingly inexpensive” to visit in 2025, and it’s easy to see why both stand out as great value travel destinations.

According to the list, these cities offer rich culture, musical heritage, and cuisine without the high cost of some better-known tourist hubs. They combine affordability with charm in ways that make vacations memorable without draining the wallet. For the full feature, see Daily Passport’s piece on surprisingly inexpensive U.S. cities to visit.

Memphis, Tennessee, brings together food, music, and history in a package that’s easier on your budget than many other major U.S. cities. Hotel stays tend to be affordable—even well-known locations like the Peabody Hotel sometimes offer rooms for under $200 a night. Daily Passport The city’s culinary offerings are a big draw: barbecue joints, soul‐food staples, and casual fried chicken spots serve up generous portions at low cost. Museums and music venues also offer excellent value; for instance, tours of Graceland start around $42, many Beale Street venues have low cover charges, and several outdoor concerts and festivals are free or very inexpensive.

Nashville, meanwhile, is growing in popularity — but as of now, many of its attractions remain affordable. According to Daily Passport, you can find lodging, meals, and entertainment without paying over the top. Honky‐tonks and live music venues on Broadway often have free live shows or modest cover charges (frequently under $15). Daily Passport Dining ranges from street-food style hot chicken that costs under $20 to more mid-range restaurants in buzzing neighborhoods like the Gulch. Outdoor recreation and cultural attractions, such as the full-scale replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, offer low- or no-cost fun.

What makes both Memphis and Nashville especially appealing is how sustainability of cost combines with abundance of experience. These cities offer everything from historic landmarks and music heritage to festivals, murals, parks, and vibrant dining scenes. Transportation costs tend to be reasonable, many attractions are walkable or free, and the density of things to do in each city means less wasted time or money getting from place to place. For travelers who want a taste of southern culture, music, and history without constantly opening their wallets, these cities deliver.

In comparison to other “cheap” destinations, Memphis and Nashville stack up favorably. They may not be as frequently cited as ultra-budget spots, but their blend of affordability and cultural depth makes them compelling choices. Where some cheaper cities might offer low prices but few iconic attractions, Memphis and Nashville offer both — historic value, great food, and world-class music — all at prices that let you enjoy more without spending more. If you’re planning a trip and balancing cost with cultural richness, both are excellent picks.
