District 8 Maury County Commissioner, businessman and Marine veteran Gabe Howard has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Maury County.
“For the past several years, I’ve had the honor of serving as a Maury County commissioner,” Howard said in his announcement. “My beautiful wife Rachael and I are raising our four boys right here in Maury County. We want them to grow up loving this place the way we do — and someday, if they choose, to stay here, work here, and raise their families here too. That belief shapes every decision we make.”
Among the priorities he listed are well-managed growth matched by infrastructure and county services, the preservation of the rural character of Maury County, long-term water supply, fiscal responsibility and more decision-making representation for residents of the rural county.
“This is about building a Maury County that works — not just today, but 10, 20 and 30 years from now… [w]here progress doesn’t come at the expense of the land, the people, or the quality of life that brought so many of us here in the first place,” Howard said. “I’m grateful for the trust you’ve placed in me as a county commissioner, and I would be honored to earn your support as your next Maury County Mayor.”
Current Maury County Mayor
Sheila Butt announced her plans to seek reelection a few weeks ago. When former Republican state representative Sheila Butt ran for Maury County Mayor as an independent three years ago, she promised she would serve one term and be done. Now she’s announced she is seeking another term and will seek the Republican nomination in a county caucus in February.
Butt and Howard will face off in a GOP caucus on February 21 to gain the Republican Party nomination. The winner will be on the general election ballot in August. Only “bona fide” Republicans are eligible to participate in the caucus process, meaning they have voted in a minimum of three of the last four GOP statewide primaries.
