November 4, 2025 – Dick Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, has passed away at the age of 84. His family confirmed that he died overnight on November 3, 2025, due to complications from pneumonia and ongoing cardiac and vascular disease.
Born on January 30, 1941, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Cheney embarked on a distinguished political career that began during the Nixon administration and spanned several decades. He served as White House Chief of Staff under President Gerald Ford, represented Wyoming as a U.S. Congressman for ten years, and held the position of Secretary of Defense under President George H.W. Bush, where he oversaw critical military operations, including Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the Gulf War.
Following his tenure in public office, Cheney became the CEO of Halliburton before joining George W. Bush’s presidential campaign in 2000. He served as Vice President from 2001 to 2009, a period marked by significant historical events.
Cheney played a crucial role in shaping the U.S. response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He was a strong advocate for expanded executive powers and was instrumental in the controversial invasion of Iraq in 2003 based on claims of weapons of mass destruction, which were later disproven. His policies, including the use of enhanced interrogation techniques, earned him a reputation as one of the most powerful vice presidents in U.S. history, though they also drew substantial criticism for contributing to prolonged wars and debates over civil liberties.
In recent years, Cheney’s views diverged from those of the Republican Party, particularly during the Trump administration. Notably, he endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential Election, aligning with his daughter, former Representative Liz Cheney, in this unexpected political stance.
Cheney had a long history of health issues, including several heart attacks dating back to 1978, a heart transplant in 2012, and ongoing treatment for cardiac conditions. He passed away surrounded by family. Cheney is survived by his wife Lynne, daughters Liz and Mary, and several grandchildren.
