PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — Dollywood Parks & Resorts is preparing for its most significant expansion in its history, with the announcement of NightFlight Expedition, a $50 million attraction set to open in spring 2026 at the popular Smoky Mountain theme park.
Park officials say it marks the largest single attraction investment in the 40-year history of Dollywood.
Dolly Parton shared her excitement in a video message, saying the new attraction reflects Dollywood’s growth and its future.
“I have no doubt it’s going to be a huge part of Dollywood’s next 40 years,” Parton said. “We’re always trying to take the natural beauty of the Smokies and make it part of everything we’re doing in the park, and they’ve definitely been able to do it with this ride.”
A World-First Ride Experience
Billed as the world’s first indoor family hybrid coaster and whitewater river raft ride, NightFlight Expedition will take guests on a 5½-minute journey that blends four experiences into one: a soaring flight over the Smokies, a whitewater rafting adventure through more than 500,000 gallons of rushing water, a roller coaster along a mountain ridge, and a boat ride across a glowing lake.
The custom-designed ride is being developed by Dollywood, Herschend Creative Studios, and Mack Rides, a German manufacturer recently awarded Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket for Best New Innovation. It will be housed in a 44,000-square-foot, climate-controlled facility, allowing year-round operation regardless of Smoky Mountain weather.
Economic and Tourism Impact
Dollywood President Eugene Naughton called the project a milestone for the park and the region’s economy. “As the largest addition in our history, it not only represents a major milestone for our company, but it also sets a new standard for guest offerings,” Naughton said. “NightFlight Expedition allows us to celebrate our rich Smoky Mountain heritage, while creating a ride that helps us deliver on providing a world-class experience.”
The investment underscores Dollywood’s growing role as one of Tennessee’s top tourism drivers. The park has been repeatedly recognized among the nation’s best theme parks, drawing millions of visitors annually to Sevier County. Tourism officials expect NightFlight Expedition to attract new guests, extending the economic benefits to hotels, restaurants, and businesses across the region.
Storytelling and Smoky Mountain Magic
In true Dollywood fashion, NightFlight Expedition weaves local culture and storytelling into its design. Guests will join twin scientists Cora and Jasper Oakley, relatives of Wildwood Grove’s fictional explorer Ned Oakley, on a quest to uncover “Secret Lake,” the mystical source behind the Wildwood Tree’s glowing canopy. The ride integrates state-of-the-art projections, dynamic lighting, and immersive audio to highlight the natural wonders of the Smokies, including bioluminescent life and star-filled mountain skies.
Parton noted the nighttime theme is especially personal. “Our new ride sends you out into the mountains at night, which is the time that I think they really come to life,” she said. “It’s pure mountain magic.”
Season Pass and Upcoming Festivals
Dollywood is offering current 2025 season passholders early access opportunities to experience the ride before its public debut. Pre-registration for 2026 passes runs through Oct. 5, with general public sales opening Nov. 1.
Meanwhile, Dollywood’s 40th anniversary season continues with the Harvest Festival through Oct. 27, featuring Great Pumpkin LumiNights, live performances, and fall-inspired food. The year will conclude with the award-winning Smoky Mountain Christmas celebration, running Nov. 1 through Jan. 4, 2026, featuring six million lights and seasonal entertainment.
