Tennessee Vols Advance to 2nd Round After Dominant Win Against Miami-Ohio

The Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball opened their NCAA Tournament run with an emphatic statement, rolling past Miami (Ohio) RedHawks men’s basketball 78–56 in the Round of 64. Tennessee’s defense set the tone early, holding one of the nation’s most efficient offenses to just 35% shooting and a season-worst performance from beyond the arc. Guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie led the way with 29 points and nine assists, sparking a dominant first half that saw the Vols build a commanding lead and never look back. Miami, which entered the tournament with 32 wins and one of the best records in the country, struggled to generate consistent offense outside of Peter Suder’s 27-point effort.

With the win, Tennessee advances to face the Virginia Cavaliers in the next round, setting up a high-profile matchup between two disciplined, defensively strong programs. Virginia, a No. 3 seed, advanced after defeating Wright State and brings a balanced attack along with postseason experience.

The matchup will test Tennessee’s ability to sustain its defensive intensity while finding consistent scoring against a Cavaliers team known for controlling tempo. A victory would send the Volunteers into the tournament’s second weekend, continuing their push for a deep March run.
